III Bird's Walk

Avemariapuríssimaaaa, good morning.

Good morning, Toni.

We’ve met again, this time in the Garraf massif; since we can’t get there, not even with the Ventus, then on foot.

And what a sea, what a sea we saw! Only the sky is as wild, right? Water, water forming and unforming into clouds as we walk in single file, cheerful, climbing beside the silent quarry.

It’s Saturday, 18 February. In the first part of the walk, Pere, Oriol and Joan Claudi, together with Toni’s family and friends, follow the long-distance path that has brought us to Vallgrassa, the little farmhouse turned art centre in the middle of the park, where we stop for breakfast. A few vines still remain beside the desert of stone, palmetto and thyme. We set off again along the dry pebble streambed — a resonant path, well chosen by Max — topped off by a good climb, breathing hard, where we meet up again with Domènec, Rafa, Aleix and other friends who chose the “light” walk and are waiting for us on the ridge road, near La Morella, the peak we won’t climb.

And on we go, down towards Castelldefels; first we leave the landfill on our left. It no longer smells, nor is it full of gulls as it was thirty years ago — just a lone eagle, suddenly far off, by the Rat Penat road.

The descent is magnificent, and quite demanding too, and we’re grateful for the last stop before reaching the castle, to gather again and rest with the sea spread out before us. A little longer and we arrive, to eat together in the small meadow with carob trees on the sunny side. We don’t talk much. Teresa, happy, shares out cava and the sweet, cherished memory.
